The visible part of a fence gets the attention, but the part buried in the ground is what determines whether it survives. Nearly every fence failure that is not caused by rot or a falling tree traces back to the posts: set too shallow, spaced too wide, or anchored in a hole that holds water. Installation is the discipline of getting those posts right, then hanging everything else on them square and plumb, and in central Oklahoma the soil and wind make the post work especially unforgiving.

How do you lay out a fence before digging?

Good installation starts before any tool touches the ground. The property line is confirmed, often against a survey, so the fence does not stray onto a neighbor's lot or violate a setback. String lines are run to mark a straight, true path, and post locations are measured and marked along that line at a consistent spacing, commonly around eight feet on center for wood and closer for heavier panels. In Oklahoma, calling the state's 811 one-call service to have underground utilities located is a legal step and a practical one, because a fence line frequently crosses gas, water, cable, and electric runs. Only once the line, the corners, and the gate openings are pinned down does digging begin.

What tools dig fence post holes?

The hole itself can be made several ways, and the choice depends on the soil and the number of posts. A post hole clam-shell digger, also called a post hole pincer or simply post hole digger, is the hand tool used to dig holes a few inches to about a foot in diameter for setting fence and sign posts; you drive it down, spread the handles, and lift out a plug of soil. When the ground is hard, rocky, or full of roots, a digging bar, a long straight metal bar known regionally as a spud bar, pinch point bar, or San Angelo bar, breaks up and loosens the compacted material so the clam-shell can clear it. For larger jobs, an earth auger, also called an earth drill or post-hole auger, uses a rotating vertical rod with cutting blades to bore holes quickly, whether handheld, two-person, or mounted on a machine. Central Oklahoma's dense red clay and occasional rock often mean a crew reaches for the digging bar far more than a homeowner expects.

How deep should a post be set?

Depth is the single most important number in fence installation. A widely followed rule sets at least one third of the post's total length below grade, so a six foot tall fence commonly uses posts buried roughly two to three feet deep. Depth does two jobs: it resists the leverage of wind pushing on the fence face, and it reaches below the zone where seasonal moisture swings move the soil. Corner and gate posts carry the most load and are often set deeper and in more concrete than line posts, since a corner ties two runs together and a gate post absorbs the swinging weight of the leaf. Taller privacy fences also catch more wind, so a six foot stockade run generally demands more depth than a four foot picket line covering the same distance. Skimping on depth is the most common shortcut in a cheap installation, and it is invisible until the first strong storm leans the whole run.

Why does frost and soil movement matter here?

Oklahoma's frost line is shallow compared with northern states, so deep frost heave is a smaller concern than in the upper Midwest. The bigger local enemy is expansive clay. The red clay across much of Oklahoma County swells when it absorbs water and shrinks as it dries, and that cyclical movement pries at anything set in it. Posts set too shallow ride that swelling and gradually tilt. This is why depth, a hole belled slightly wider at the bottom so concrete resists uplift, and drainage under the post all matter more here than a simple frost calculation would suggest.

How are posts set in concrete?

Once a post stands plumb in its hole, it is braced in two directions and the concrete goes in. Many installers place a few inches of gravel at the bottom of the hole first so water drains away from the end of the post rather than pooling against it, which is the moisture that rots a wood post from the base up. Concrete is poured or mixed in the hole around the post and, importantly, sloped or crowned at the top so it sheds water away from the wood rather than cradling it. The post is checked for plumb one last time and left braced until the concrete cures. Rushing the next steps before the concrete sets is a reliable way to end up with posts that drifted out of line.

What comes after the posts are set?

With the posts cured, the rest of the build is fast by comparison. Rails are attached between posts, level or stepped to follow a slope, then the infill goes on: pickets nailed or screwed to the rails for wood, panels bracketed in place for vinyl and metal, or mesh stretched tight and tied for chain-link. Gates are hung last so they can be aligned to the finished opening, and this is where extra bracing and heavier hinges pay off, because a gate swings thousands of times and concentrates all that motion on a few fasteners. What separates a lasting installation from a quick one?

The difference between a fence that stands straight for decades and one that leans within a couple of seasons is almost never the wood or the panels; it is the invisible work. Correct depth, adequate concrete, drainage at the base of the post, plumb setting, and proper spacing for the wind load are the details that do not show in a photo but decide everything. A fence is only as honest as its post holes, and in a place with expansive clay and open wind like central Oklahoma, that honesty is tested every single storm season.
