The part of a fence that decides whether it stands straight for twenty years or leans within two is the part nobody sees. Post depth, hole diameter, the soil around the post, and the way concrete is set at the base do more to determine a fence's longevity than the pickets or the paint ever will. In Edmond, where expansive clay soils, wind, and freeze-thaw cycles all conspire against a poorly set post, getting the below-ground work right is the difference between a fence and a future repair bill.

How deep should a fence post really go?

The reliable rule for a standard residential fence is to bury roughly one-third of the total post length, or a minimum of two feet, whichever is deeper. A six-foot-tall privacy fence therefore wants a post around nine feet long set about three feet into the ground, and even where a shorter post is used, dropping below the two-foot mark is asking for trouble. The logic is leverage. A fence is essentially a tall sail that catches wind, and every gust tries to pivot the post out of the soil. The deeper the buried portion, the more soil bears against it and the harder it is to lever loose.

Depth also fights frost. Although Central Oklahoma's frost line is shallow compared to the northern plains, setting the post base below the depth where the ground freezes and thaws keeps seasonal heaving from slowly jacking the post upward. Corner and gate posts deserve special attention, since they carry the most stress. A gate post in particular should go deeper and be set more heavily than a line post, because it bears the swinging weight and daily abuse of the gate. What tools make digging fence holes easier?

The right tool depends on the soil and the number of holes. For a handful of holes in reasonable ground, a clam-shell post hole digger is the classic choice, a pincer of two blades that bites into the soil and lifts a neat plug out of a hole a few inches across, exactly the diameter a fence post wants. Whatever the method, the goal is a hole with the right depth, a diameter about three times the post width, and roughened rather than glazed sides so concrete grips well.

How wide should the hole be and why?

Hole diameter is as important as depth and is often shortchanged. A good rule is a hole roughly three times the width of the post, so a four-inch post wants a hole around ten to twelve inches across. That width matters because the concrete footing needs enough mass and enough bearing surface against the surrounding soil to resist the leverage of wind loads. A skinny hole barely wider than the post gives the concrete almost nothing to push against, and the whole plug can rock in the ground.

The bottom of the hole deserves attention too. Flaring the base slightly wider than the top, so the footing is shaped a little like an inverted funnel, creates a bell that soil cannot easily lift, which further resists frost heave. Placing a few inches of gravel at the very bottom before anything else gives water a path to drain away from the end of the post rather than pooling around it.

Should you use concrete, and how should it be mixed?

For most fences in Edmond's clay soil, concrete is the right call, especially for corner, end, and gate posts that carry the greatest load. The debate is usually between pouring dry mix into the hole and letting ground moisture cure it versus mixing the concrete with water first. Mixing with water is the more reliable method, because it guarantees the concrete actually hydrates and reaches full strength rather than curing unevenly around a dry pocket. The dry-pour method is faster and can work in consistently damp soil, but it leaves more to chance.

Whichever approach is used, the post should be braced plumb in two directions and checked with a level before the concrete sets, since a post nudged out of vertical while wet stays that way permanently. The single most important finishing detail is sloping the top of the concrete collar so it sheds water away from the post rather than forming a flat or dished surface that holds a puddle against the wood. Water trapped at the concrete-to-post joint is the leading cause of rot in wood posts and rust at the base of steel ones, so that little slope earns its keep for the entire life of the fence.

Is concrete always necessary?

Not every post demands concrete. Some installers prefer to set line posts by tamping gravel and soil in tight layers around them, arguing that a well-tamped gravel set drains freely and lets a wood post breathe, which can actually extend its life compared to concrete that traps moisture against the grain. Gravel-set posts are also far easier to remove or reset later. The trade-off is that gravel provides less rigid resistance to wind and to the leverage a tall privacy fence generates, so it is best reserved for shorter fences, lighter loads, and stable soils.

For the tall privacy fences most Edmond homeowners want, and for the high-stress corner and gate posts on any fence, concrete remains the dependable standard. A sound approach on a big run is to concrete the posts that carry real load and consider gravel only on protected line posts in good soil. Getting depth, width, drainage, and setting method right at the outset is unglamorous work, but it is the reason a properly built fence still stands plumb long after a carelessly set one has begun its slow lean toward the neighbor's yard.
